I’m currently working on a “intranet” page that will give some direction to our staff and lay-leaders in several areas. Just what is an “intranet” page and why would a church want one? I’m glad you asked, because that’s what I’ll be describing today!
What is a church intranet?
Basically, this is a site that we don’t talk about anywhere except with staff and leaders. That’s not because it’s top-secret, or exclusionary. It’s actually because most folks at the church won’t care about it.
This is the place you find basic help for finding the correct staff and group leader sites and information. It has exciting links like “expense reports” and training videos on some of the tech systems we use.
Why would I waste time on this?
Maybe you wouldn’t. But I get asked the same basic questions about 1200 times a week. How do I reset my email password? How do I take attendance for my group? Having a central hub for leaders and staff will alleviate the copy/paste text responses and or phone calls. But I’m not using this as a way to avoid people, it’s actually a way to make sure that they get more timely help. You see I can’t always drop what I’m doing and immediately walk through how to take attendance for a group Bible study leader. But if I have a central place where those kind of questions are answered, my leaders can find those answers in their own time frame. It’s really about serving my people more effectively.
What sort of things am I putting on this website?
I’m breaking this site into a couple of categories: 1) Staff Helps (these are the people who will be most likely to use this site). 2) Group Leader Helps (the next most likely group). 3) General forms. This "intranet” site is going to have all the instructional information and links that leaders need, without making our main website overly clunky.
How am I creating this resource?
I’m just using Sharepoint from the Office 365 suite to take care of this project. It’s a really simple web page builder that you probably already have access to with your office subscription.
In other news… I try to post every week, within a range of topics. Each month I try to create a post about digital ways to disciple people. Last month’s post was:
